Bachata Social World Cup: how the Czech qualifier in Prague works

No choreography, no lifts, no rehearsed partner. Just you, a partner you are drawn with and a song you do not choose. Here is how the social world cup works and how to get to Geneva.

Choreography competitions reward the couple with the best rehearsed routine. The Bachata Social World Cup rewards something else: how well you dance with a partner you just met, to a song you did not choose, on a real social floor. It is a bachata competition built around social dancing, with qualifiers at festivals around the world. Here is how it works, and how to qualify through the Czech round at Bachata Czech Republic Festival in Prague.

What is the Bachata Social World Cup, the global bachata J&J?

The Bachata Social World Cup is an international series of social Jack and Jill competitions. Qualifiers run at festivals in many countries, and the winners meet at the World Finals in Geneva, held during the Bachata Geneva Festival at Palexpo. The official site is bachatasocialworldcup.com, which lists every qualifier.

In a Jack and Jill, leaders and followers enter separately, are paired at random, and dance to music nobody knows in advance. You cannot plan a routine, so the judges see what you really do on a social floor: lead and follow, musicality, connection.

The World Cup finals at the Bachata Geneva Festival

The World Cup finals usually take place in October in Geneva, Switzerland, inside the Bachata Geneva Festival at Palexpo, which calls itself a festival of the nations. The 2026 finals had places for around 180 dancers, leaders and followers, who came through the different qualification routes. Finalists represent their country on the dance floor, and the music, the partners and every song are drawn as at any qualifier, so the champion is the dancer who connects best with whoever they meet.

How you qualify for the World Finals

There are several routes to Geneva. The main one for dancers in Europe is a European qualifier: an official social competition at a festival, with places for that event set by the World Cup rules for the season. Qualifiers in recent seasons have run in cities from Sofia and Budapest to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Madrid and Paris. There are also intercontinental qualifiers, a prequalifier cup in Geneva on the Friday of finals weekend, and an elite route by experience and video. The World Cup site has the current rules for each route.

Bachata Czech Republic Festival is the official Czech qualifier. It was on the World Cup qualifier list for the 2026 edition and runs again on Saturday 27 February 2027 in Prague.

Competition rules: keep the Jack and Jill social

  • No lifts.
  • No acrobatics.
  • No choreography, only true lead and follow.
  • Your dorsal number must be visible throughout the competition.
  • Dress code: stylish and comfortable, no costumes. Our guide to what to wear for bachata dancing helps.

How a Jack and Jill bachata competition is judged

The judging criteria at the Prague qualifier are:

  1. Leading and following quality: adaptability and floorcraft
  2. Technique: clarity, smoothness, control, lines and balance
  3. Connection with your partner and with the music
  4. Musicality: timing, interpretation, creativity
  5. Personality: presence, authenticity, energy
  6. X-factor: the something that makes your dance unforgettable

Notice what is missing: tricks. A clean, musical dance where your partner clearly enjoys themselves beats a show of moves your partner struggles to follow. If you want to sharpen these skills over the weekend, pick your workshops on the festival program.

The music, the song and the dance floor

In a social Jack and Jill nobody knows the song in advance. The DJ plays bachata as it would be played at a party, and each round you dance with a new partner drawn at random. Some songs are fast and playful, some slow and romantic; the judges want to see you listen and change with the music. Leaders and followers who flow with the song and with each other score higher than those who repeat a prepared combination.

Who can participate?

Any dancer who can social dance confidently can enter as a leader or a follower, from local dancers to visitors from abroad. You register through the World Cup platform, which sets the rules for each season, and you need a festival pass from us to compete. Places in Prague are limited to 50 leaders and 50 followers, so register early. Check the World Cup site for any eligibility rules, for example if you have already qualified elsewhere.

Prizes for the winners in Prague

The champion leader and the champion follower each receive:

  • direct qualification for the World Finals in Geneva
  • 150 EUR in cash
  • a full pass for BCR 2028
  • full passes to selected international festivals
  • the official BCR T-shirt

Second and third place take a full pass to BCR 2028, passes to selected international events and the T-shirt.

How to join the bachata social competition

Two steps and about five minutes:

  1. Register on the World Cup platform. Open the qualifiers list on bachatasocialworldcup.com, find Bachata Czech Republic Festival, Prague, and enter as a leader or a follower. That is where your spot is held.
  2. We email you the next steps from competition@bachataczechrepublic.com, with a payment link for your competitor pass.

You need a festival pass to compete. Choose a Competitor Party Pass, which covers the night parties and the competition, or a Competitor Full Pass for the whole festival. If you already have a full pass, you are covered for the festival and only register on the World Cup platform. Everything is on the competition page, and the passes are explained in festival passes explained.

Watch past finals

The best preparation is to watch. Finals from Geneva and from qualifiers across Europe are shared on social media and YouTube, and they show what the judges reward: connection, musicality and good vibes on the floor, not tricks.

How to prepare

  • Social dance a lot in the weeks before, with as many different partners as you can. Social dancers who connect easily do best in a J&J.
  • Dance to music you do not know. Ask a friend to play random bachata from different eras and styles.
  • Film yourself and watch for clarity: can your partner read every lead or every response?
  • Stay in the moment. Judges see when someone is dancing for them instead of with their partner.
  • Arrive rested. The prelims are on Saturday, so do not dance until 6 am on Friday.

Not competing? Come and watch, and cheer for the dancers who represent your country. The finals open the gala night, and seeing strangers create a dance together is one of the best shows of the weekend.
